Challenge

As an emerging brand in the FMCG space, Yep Kitchen faced a common Direct-to-Consumer hurdle: the "Last Mile" experience.

While their product was bold and flavourful, their shipping containers were primarily functional. In the crowded world of e-commerce, a plain brown box represents a missed opportunity. The challenge was to move beyond simple utility and create a shipping solution that:

Safely transported glass jars containing oils (preventing leaks and breakage).

Stood out in a sea of generic parcels.

Communicated the brand’s playful, high-energy personality from the moment it arrived on the doorstep.

The approach

Against Ordinary moved away from "off-the-shelf" thinking, focusing on story-first design and tactile engagement. They reframed the shipping box as a "stage" for the brand.

Reframing the Box: Instead of treating the exterior as just a carrier, we utilised the surface area to scream “Yep!” The design focused on bold typography and vibrant brand colours to ensure immediate recognition.

The “Unboxing” Narrative: The internal layout was designed to build anticipation. By integrating clever messaging and “Easter eggs” (like the “HO HO HOT” campaign variants), they created a choreographed reveal of the product.

Bespoke Protection: The approach balanced aesthetics with engineering. Custom inserts were designed to cradle the jars, reducing the need for excess plastic filler and reinforcing the brand’s commitment to a more premium, sustainable feel.

The impact

The redesign transformed a logistics necessity into a powerful marketing tool.

Shareable Brand Equity: The packaging became “Instagrammable,” encouraging customers to share their unboxing experiences on social media. This organic user-generated content (UGC) acted as a low-cost acquisition channel.

Record-Breaking Sales: The enhanced D2C experience contributed to record sales during peak seasons, particularly during their Christmas campaigns where the limited-edition Sichuan box became a highly sought-after gift.

Enhanced Brand Perception: By investing in the physical touchpoint of the brand, Yep Kitchen elevated its status from a “condiment” to a “lifestyle brand,” strengthening long-term customer loyalty and digital performance.
