Challenge

How do you translate a grassroots "road trip" origin story into a premium unboxing experience?

Wilderbee needed to bridge the gap between their humble beginnings and their ambitions as a premium pantry staple. The challenge was to create packaging that signaled high quality for new retail listings while maintaining the authentic, approachable charm that early fans loved.

Goal

The objective was to transform a functional shipping box into a brand-building asset. This required: Improving the overall customer experience from doorstep to jar. Telling the Wilderbee story in a way that deepened emotional connections. Creating a "social-first" unboxing moment that encouraged organic sharing.

The impact

The new packaging turned every delivery into a marketing moment for the brand:

Elevated Brand Perception: As Wilderbee scales into new markets and listings, they now have a professional infrastructure that matches their “best-in-class” product quality.

Deepened Customer Affinity: By sharing their journey (including the original van illustration), the brand built trust and loyalty with customers who value authenticity.

Organic Advocacy Growth: The shareable unboxing experience successfully triggered an increase in organic social content, turning customers into active brand ambassadors.

Gifting Potential: The premium finish meant the D2C packaging was frequently used for gifting, expanding the brand’s reach without additional marketing spend.

The approach

Against Ordinary designed a packaging system that celebrated the journey of the brand:

Storytelling through Design: We featured a custom illustration of the original Wilderbee food van on the box a nod to their road trips and farmers’ market roots that anchored the brand’s authenticity.

Premium Tactical Accents: We elevated the experience with gold foil accents. This signaled a premium product worth savoring and allowed the shipping box to double as a high-end gift box.

Social-First Engineering: We mapped out the unboxing journey to be visually arresting from the first flap. Every element was designed to be “Instagram-ready,” naturally driving organic social media buzz.

Cost-Efficient Luxury: We kept the base print simple for cost-effectiveness but used high-impact finishes like the foil to ensure the final product felt elite and sophisticated.
