Building a relevant brand 101

How to Build a Relevant Brand Without Losing Your Marbles (or Your Audience)

Building a brand isn’t just about slapping a logo on some business cards and posting a few inspirational quotes on LinkedIn. It’s about creating something that people actually care about. Something relevant, memorable, and—dare we say—irresistible.

So, how do you build a brand that stands out in a sea of sameness? Let’s break it down.

Step 1: know your personas – they’re more than demographics

Before you even think about logos, colours, and marketing campaigns, you need to know who you’re talking to. Your brand personas aren’t just demographics—they’re real people with real problems who need real solutions.

Ask yourself:

  • What keeps them up at night? (Besides doomscrolling.)
  • What do they actually want from a brand like yours?
  • How do they consume content—are they podcast junkies, newsletter nerds, or Instagram scrollers?

Once you’ve nailed down your personas, you’ll stop shouting into the void and start speaking directly to the people who matter.

Case study:

Yep Kitchen came to us with a problem. They wanted to do a Christmas campaign but didn’t know how to bridge the gap between Chinese Chilli, their Yep Kid mascot and Christmas, it seemed like such an unlikely mix. They knew their audience is young, cool foodies that are always on the hunt for something new. Okay, challenge accepted, we can make it work for those people…

Step 2: find your unique positioning (because nobody likes a copycat)

Let’s be real: If your brand sounds just like everyone else’s, why should anyone care?

Your unique positioning is the sweet spot between what you do best and what your audience desperately needs. It’s what makes you you. Maybe it’s your expertise, your storytelling, your customer service, or your wildly unconventional approach to an age-old industry.

Find it. Own it. And don’t be afraid to be bold about it..

Case study:

Yep Kitchen is super unique in it’s product; authentic Chinese chilli oils, and it’s personality; having a fun tone of voice coming from their brand mascot Yep Kid. We didn’t need to get too involved in making the brand unique – they’d nailed that, but where they did need help was making that uniqueness relevant to the season..

Step 3: strike the perfect balance between trending & timeless

Chasing every TikTok trend might get you a few viral moments, but if your brand lacks substance, you’ll be forgotten faster than last year’s dance challenges.

The trick? Balance. Jump on trends only when they align with your brand’s identity. (If your company sells industrial machinery, maybe don’t force the latest Gen Z slang into your marketing.) Meanwhile, keep creating timeless content that positions you as an authority in your space—educational, insightful, and authentically you.

Case study:

Christmas was already going to be ‘trending’ which was a perfect opportunity to jump on a find the connection between the two. After hours of wordplay, we discovered we could outline the ‘T’ in hot so it read “HO HO HO” with the “HOT HOT HOT” as a secondary message.

Step 4: Pick Your Marketing Mix Wisely (Because Not Every Channel is Your Friend)

You don’t need to be everywhere—you just need to be where your audience is.

  • If they love snappy, informative content? LinkedIn and Twitter.
  • If they’re obsessed with visuals? Instagram and Pinterest.
  • If they live for in-depth insights? Blogs, podcasts, and newsletters.

Choosing the right marketing mix means investing your time and budget in the places that actually drive results—not just because everyone else is doing it.

Case study:

We worked with Yep Kitchen to create a suit of digital asset for their website, remarketing banners and paid ads which included animation as well as print material. This meant they could capture their audience at different stages of the funnel. People looking for something different for a Christmas gift didn’t stand a chance against the campaign.

Step 5: Nail your customer journey (so they don’t ghost you)

Ever been on a website so confusing you gave up halfway through? Yeah, don’t let that be your brand.

Your customer journey should be seamless from the first touchpoint to the final purchase (and beyond). That means:

  • A crystal-clear website experience (no treasure hunts required)
  • Engaging, valuable content at every stage
  • A smooth buying process (because nobody likes friction)
  • Post-sale engagement that turns customers into loyal fans

Your goal? To make the journey so effortless that customers want to come back for more.

Case study:

Using the personas and the ‘HOT HOT HOT’ theme of the campaign to craft messaging that not only made them feel seen, but showed the uniqueness of the campaign and Yep Kitchens products. Winner winner.

Building a relevant brand isn’t about being the loudest in the room, it’s about being the most meaningful. Understand your audience, own your positioning, balance trendiness with substance, choose your channels wisely, and create an experience that people love.

Do that, and your brand won’t just be another name in the crowd, it’ll be the one people actually remember. Need help staying relevant, or have a brief as challenging as this one? We’d love to hear it.
